Messages — Communicating with Finders
How to use the QrioTag messaging system to communicate anonymously with people who find your items.
When someone scans your QrioTag and sends you a message, it lands in your inbox — no phone numbers exchanged, no email addresses exposed. QrioTag's messaging system keeps both sides private while giving you everything you need to coordinate a return.
Anonymous by Design
Your email and phone are never shared with the finder. Both sides communicate exclusively through the QrioTag platform.
Chat Interface
A familiar two-panel layout — conversation list on the left, full thread on the right — works like any modern messaging app.
Instant Notifications
New messages trigger email, push, and in-app alerts so you never miss a finder trying to reach you.
How Anonymous Messaging Works
QrioTag's messaging system is designed to protect both you and the finder:
- Your email and phone are never shared with the finder (unless you explicitly included them in a PUBLIC profile)
- The finder's email and phone are never shared with you
- Both sides communicate through the QrioTag platform
- Messages are identified by the tag they relate to (e.g., "Message about: Car Keys")
- The finder appears as "Finder" (or whatever name they chose to enter)
Opening Your Inbox
To access your messages:
- Click "Messages" in the navigation menu
- Or click the "Messages" quick action on your dashboard
- Or click the notification when you receive a new message
The Inbox Layout
A two-panel layout on desktop works like a familiar messaging app:
Left Panel — Conversation List
The left side shows all your message threads. Each thread shows:
- Sender name (usually "Finder")
- Tag name — which item the message is about
- Preview — the first line of the most recent message
- Timestamp — when the last message was sent
- Unread indicator — a bold style or dot for threads with unread messages
Right Panel — Message Thread
When you click on a conversation, the right side shows the full thread:
- All messages in chronological order
- Your messages appear on the right side (like WhatsApp or iMessage)
- The finder's messages appear on the left side
- Each message shows the time it was sent
- A reply box at the bottom for typing your response
On mobile devices, the inbox shows only the conversation list. Tap a conversation to see the full thread. Use the back button to return to the list.

Reading Messages
To read a message:
- Open your Messages inbox
- Click on the conversation in the left panel
- The full thread appears in the right panel
- The message is automatically marked as read
When a message is read, the unread indicator disappears from the conversation list, and the unread count on the "Messages" navigation item decreases.
Replying to Messages
Open the Conversation
Click on the conversation you want to reply to.
Type Your Reply
Click into the text box at the bottom of the conversation and type your message.
Send the Message
Press Enter on your keyboard, or click the Send button.
Your reply appears in the conversation thread immediately. The finder will be notified that they have a response (if they provided an email or have an account).
Keyboard Shortcuts
The messaging interface supports keyboard shortcuts for efficiency:
| Shortcut | What It Does |
|---|---|
| Enter | Send the message |
| Shift + Enter | Add a new line (without sending) |
If you want to write a longer message with multiple paragraphs, use Shift + Enter to create line breaks, then press Enter when you are ready to send.
Unread Indicators
Unread messages are highlighted throughout the app so you never miss one:
| Where | What You See |
|---|---|
| Navigation menu | A badge on the "Messages" item showing the unread count (e.g., "Messages (3)") |
| Dashboard | The "Unread Messages" stat card shows the total count |
| Inbox — conversation list | Unread conversations appear in bold with a colored dot |
| You receive an email notification for new messages (if enabled in settings) | |
| Push notification | A push alert on your phone (if enabled) |

Tips for Effective Communication
Be Polite and Grateful
The finder is doing you a favor. A warm, appreciative tone goes a long way toward a successful return.
Suggest a Safe Pickup Spot
Be specific about where to meet. Choose a public, well-lit location like a coffee shop or police station lobby.
Respond Quickly
The sooner you reply, the more likely the finder will follow through. Finders who don't hear back quickly often move on.
Keep It on Platform
Do not share your personal phone number or home address. The QrioTag messaging system is designed to protect you — use it.
Acknowledge Any Reward
If you offered a reward, mention it early to reassure the finder that you will follow through on your promise.
