Example: Lost Dog Recovery

A complete walkthrough of how QrioTag helps reunite a lost dog with its owner — from buying the tag to anonymous contact and reward payment.

What this example shows

This walkthrough follows a tag purchase, activation, lost report, anonymous finder contact, and reward payment — demonstrating the full end-to-end lifecycle of QrioTag's core lost-and-found use case.

This example follows Sarah and her Golden Retriever, Max, through the entire QrioTag experience. Every step includes the API calls that happen behind the scenes.

The Characters

Sarah

Max's owner. Has a QrioTag account on the BASIC plan.

Max

Sarah's Golden Retriever, 3 years old, microchipped.

Mike

A stranger who finds Max in his neighborhood.

Step 1: Sarah Buys a QrioTag Pet Tag

Sarah visits the QrioTag shop and picks out a QrioTag Pet tag in blue.

After payment, Stripe fires a webhook. The order moves to CONFIRMED, then Sarah receives an order confirmation email. A few days later, the tag arrives in the mail.

Step 2: Sarah Activates the Tag

Sarah takes the tag out of the packaging and scans the QR code with her phone. The QR code opens a page that says "Activate this tag."

Sarah scans the QR code or enters the QrioTag ID

The tag has a QrioTag ID printed on it: QRIO-A3K9M2X7. Sarah enters this on the activation page.

Sarah fills in Max's profile

She enters Max's details:

  • Pet name: Max
  • Species: Dog
  • Breed: Golden Retriever
  • Color: Golden
  • Age: 3 years
  • Microchip number: 985112345678901
  • Vet: Dr. Wilson, Portland Pet Clinic, (503) 555-0142
  • Photo: A picture of Max smiling in the park
  • Visibility: PUBLIC (anyone who scans can see Max's info)

The tag becomes ACTIVE

Sarah attaches the tag to Max's collar. The tag status is now ACTIVE.

Step 3: Max Runs Away

Two weeks later, Sarah takes Max to Riverside Park. Max sees a squirrel, bolts after it, and disappears into the trees. Sarah searches for an hour but cannot find him.

Step 4: Sarah Marks Max as LOST

Sarah opens the QrioTag app on her phone, goes to Max's tag, and taps "Report Lost."

She enters:

  • Message: "Please help find Max! He is a friendly Golden Retriever who ran away at Riverside Park in Portland. He is microchipped and needs daily medication. If you find him, please contact me through this page."
  • Reward: $50

Step 5: Mike Finds Max

The next morning, Mike is walking in his neighborhood (about 2 miles from Riverside Park) and sees a Golden Retriever wandering alone with a collar and tag. He approaches Max, who is friendly and happy to see someone.

Mike notices the QrioTag on Max's collar. He pulls out his phone and points the camera at the QR code.

Step 6: Mike Scans the QR Code

Mike's phone camera reads the QR code and opens a URL:

https://qriotag.to/scan/aGVsbG8gd29ybGQ...

This URL contains the encrypted tag ID. Mike does not need to install any app — it opens directly in his phone's web browser.

What Mike sees on the scan page:

  • Max's photo
  • Name: Max
  • Status: LOST (highlighted in red)
  • Breed: Golden Retriever
  • Sarah's message: "Please help find Max! He is a friendly Golden Retriever who ran away at Riverside Park in Portland..."
  • Reward: $50
  • Button: "Contact Owner"
  • Button: "Share Location"

Privacy preserved

Mike does not see Sarah's name, email, phone number, or any personal details. He only sees the information Sarah chose to share about Max.

Step 7: Mike Contacts Sarah

Mike taps "Contact Owner" on the scan page. He enters:

  • Name: Mike (or any alias he chooses)
  • Message: "Hi! I found Max wandering in the Sellwood neighborhood. He seems healthy and happy. I have him in my backyard with some water. Let me know how to get him back to you!"

Step 8: Sarah Replies

Sarah sees the notification on her phone. She opens the QrioTag dashboard, goes to Messages, and sees Mike's message. She replies:

"Thank you so much, Mike! I have been looking everywhere for Max. I can come pick him up right now. Could you share your cross streets? I can be there in 15 minutes."

Step 9: Sarah Picks Up Max

Sarah drives to Mike's location and finds Max wagging his tail in the front yard. She thanks Mike and takes Max home.

Step 10: Sarah Marks Max as FOUND

Back home, Sarah opens the QrioTag app and marks Max's tag as FOUND.

Step 11: Sarah Pays the Reward

Sarah goes to the Rewards section and pays the $50 reward to Mike.

Step 12: Sarah Reactivates Max's Tag

Sarah marks the tag as ACTIVE again so it is ready in case Max goes on another adventure.

Key takeaway

At no point did Mike see Sarah's phone number, email address, home address, or real name. At no point did Sarah see Mike's personal information. The entire interaction happened through QrioTag's anonymous relay system. Both parties communicated safely, Max was returned home, and Mike got his reward.
